Children’s Life Issue Sessions
Children and teens struggle with a broad range of issues, some of which are obvious to parents or others and some of which even very young children will do their best to hide, often successfully. Adults may only be aware that the child is acting out in some way. When issues remain unresolved, self esteem is often affected.
Common Issues:
Family separation Learning problems (which may have nothing to do with learning disabilities) Bullying Grief and loss Loneliness and rejection Low self esteem Ongoing anger Difficulty adapting to change Sibling rivalry Nightmares Depression Drug and alcohol use
Acting out can take many forms, amongst which may be:
Inattention in class Refusal to do school work or homework Obsession with high standards Being withdrawn Refusing to talk and insisting they are fine Temper tantrums Crying easily Poor sleep or appetite Clinginess, especially on separating from parent Ongoing sullenness Anxiety or restlessness
When may it be necessary to seek help?
If your child’s unhappiness or behaviour has persisted and remained unresolved despite your best attempts to give them extra support and/or address the situation, outside help may be needed and usually the sooner the better for those involved. This can be especially valuable and useful if the parents are themselves stressed or struggling.
It is helpful to remember that these issues are very common human problems: having such difficulties does not mean there is anything ‘wrong’ with you, your child or your parenting. Life brings us all challenges and we are rarely trained and skilled to manage them all without help, whether that be from family, friends or professionals. What matters is that we look for and find the support we need, so we can grow in strength and self-valuing, whatever life brings.
Purpose and expectations of sessions
Usually one or both parents come to the first session. This allows communication to be open and clear for all. The session time provides the space and professional insight for issues to be expressed and shared, according to the readiness of the child. Some children will respond quickly, others may take a committed period of time. Sometimes what emerges is not directly connected to the parents’ concerns, but is rather what the child chooses to focus on. It is important therefore that the session be for the child. Confidentiality is crucial and given, so the child’s permission is always asked before information is shared with a parent.
Styles of therapy
Drawing, talking, role play, stories, visualisation, play therapy, The Journey and Psychosynthesis may be used, depending on the needs and inclination of the child. I am happy to discuss these, to answer any questions and respond to any concerns you have.
Cost and time of sessions
$50 per 50 min session. After school times are available on week days. There is currently no Medicare or private health fund rebate available.
